Branch F194: English Heritage (RCHME)

Historic England and English Heritage

Historic England is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment  sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its principal powers and responsibilities are set out in the 1983 National Heritage Act. The organisation previously known as English Heritage was split into two in April 2015 creating the "new model" for English Heritage which became a charitable Trust.  English Heritage is responsible for the national collection (and the monuments) which includes over 400 historic sites. It also holds a publicly accessible archive of 10 million photographs, plans and surveys. For more information see http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/.

The Prospect Branch runs across the two organisations, but with distinct structures in each separate employer.  The Branch is divided into sections for the Historic England geographic territories, with an English Heritage section specifically for members working in the charity.

We represent members at all levels in Historic England and English Heritage, negotiating on issues like pay, health and safety and all other terms and conditions of employment.  We also provide individual advice and representation to members, as required.

We have an active branch committee made up of representatives from both Historic England and English Heritage, but we always welcome new representatives and ideas, so if you would like to get more involved in the work of your union we would love to hear from you.  You can contact us at enquiries@prospect.org.uk
