Prospect has renewed its commitment to tackle all forms of discrimination as delegates join together for the annual TUC LGBT+ conference.
Mike Clancy, Prospect general secretary said: “Despite significant progress towards equality, too many LGBT+ people continue to face discrimination and abuse.
“LGBT rights are human rights. Equality is a union issue. Not only should everyone have the right to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination, our workplaces should embrace diversity.
“Our focus is tackling discrimination and improving diversity at work, but that also means our members should be free to live their lives outside work as well.
“Trade unions have been at the forefront of campaigning on equality and changing the world of work for the better for LGBT+ people.
“Equality means working with our members in Northern Ireland to see equal marriage finally extended to all of the UK.
“And with the burden of inequality still facing our trans members, it also means speaking out and supporting action to eliminate transphobia and promote equality for all members.
“A person’s sexuality or gender identity should not determine whether they are employed, promoted or selected for redundancy – nor should they be on the receiving end of any discriminatory language.
“Prospect and BECTU sector representatives support and advise members at work every day – not just on equalities, but on all work matters. We actively negotiate policies and procedures to eliminate discrimination and promote equality for all members.”
