Why join Prospect - FAQs
Here are some of the questions we're often asked about joining Prospect.
Q Why would I join a trade union? I don't need any help.
A Prospect membership isn't only for people with problems. Prospect is influential because we speak for thousands of members. When you join Prospect, you add your voice to theirs so that Prospect can get a better deal for everyone.
Q Can't I just join if something goes wrong at work?
A You could join but Prospect wouldn't be able to help you. In fairness to all our members, we can't make our resources and expertise available to people who join only when they want help with a problem.
Q I've just started a great new career – why would I need Prospect?
A Joining Prospect now is the best move for you. Prospect has years of experience of supporting people like you – who have high expectations and great potential. We can advise on getting the best out of your current employer and developing your career further, as well as day-to-day issues at work.
Q I'm on a personal contract – can Prospect really help me?
A Yes! Although we don't negotiate your pay and conditions directly, Prospect's negotiations in your employer or your industry will influence what's available to you, too. And if problems arise at work, Prospect provides information, advice and guidance to help you help yourself plus representation wherever we can.
Q There's no union at my workplace – can Prospect represent us?
A UK trade union law means that most employees can be represented by a trade union under certain circumstances. Individual members can be represented in some formal process and members can seek collective representation rights too. If you think you and your colleagues could benefit from Prospect representation, contact one of our organisers to find out more.
Q What do membership benefits really mean in practice?
A Prospect membership includes personal injury cover, access to a 24-hour legal helpline and numerous benefits to help with day-to-day costs. For so many things in life – worries about your neighbours, being knocked off your bike, visiting the dentist – being a Prospect member makes things a little bit easier.
Q I'm not sure I can afford to join...
A You can't afford not to! None of us knows what life is going to throw at us next. But as a Prospect member you'll get the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if something goes wrong at work, you can rely on us.
