Why join Prospect - FAQs
Here are some of the questions we're often asked about joining Prospect.
Why would I join a trade union? I don't need any help.
Prospect membership isn't only for people with problems. Prospect is influential because we speak for over 140,000 people. When you join Prospect, you add your voice to theirs so that Prospect can get a better deal for everyone.
We support equal pay, equal opportunities, diversity, health and safety, good working conditions, a strong economy, and a working environment that's free of harassment, abuse or bullying. By joining Prospect, you're supporting those values in workplaces across the UK. Plus we provide individual help if you need it.
Can't I just join if something goes wrong at work?
You could join but Prospect wouldn't be able to help you. In fairness to all our members, we can't make our resources and expertise available to people who join only when they want help with a problem.
However if you are a Prospect member, we will support and advise you throughout workplace processes you may be facing, up to and including Employment Tribunal processes. If Prospect supports your case, we will arrange and pay for the associated legal fees, and be by your side every step of the way.
I've just started a great new career – why would I need Prospect?
Prospect has years of experience of supporting people like you – who have high expectations and great potential. We can advise on getting the best out of your current employer and developing your career further, help you have a voice in your industry, put you in touch with networking and mentoring opportunities, answer your employment law or contract questions, and be there for you if you have day-to-day issues at work.
I'm on a personal contract – can Prospect really help me?
Yes! Although we don't negotiate your pay and conditions directly, Prospect's negotiations in your employer or your industry will influence what's available to you, too. And if problems arise at work, Prospect provides information, advice and guidance to help you help yourself plus representation wherever we can. We can also review your contract before you sign, to help you identify whether a contract is right for you.
There's no union at my workplace – can Prospect represent us?
UK trade union law means that most employees can be represented by a trade union under certain circumstances. Individual members can be represented in some formal process and members can seek collective representation rights too. If you think you and your colleagues could benefit from Prospect representation, contact one of our organisers to find out more.
What other benefits are there?
As well as support in your career and working life, Prospect membership also includes personal injury cover, access to a 24-hour legal helpline, a free will service and a range of discounts on items from education to collectively negotiated energy deals. For so many things in life – worries about your neighbours, being knocked off your bike, visiting the dentist – being a Prospect member makes things a little bit easier.
I'm not sure I can afford to join...
Most of our members agree that you can't afford not to join. Just like you'd always make sure you have house insurance - your union membership is the critical support you may need if you face unexpected difficulties at work. Too often we get calls from people who have been made redundant without a proper process, unfairly dismissed, unfairly paid, or poorly treated in the workplace. Because they aren't union members, we can't help them.
As a Prospect member you'll get the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if something unexpected at work, you can rely on us.
Want to know how much it will cost to join us? Our membership fees scale dependent on your salary. At the start of our application form we will generate a quote for you. It takes less than a minute.
