Your campaign

Like any campaign, visibility and progress reports are essential to your campaign’s profile, member support and success.

Organise! It's the key to success. Taking up the WorkTime, YourTime campaign will:

  • increase Prospect's visibility
  • raise awareness among staff and employers of the need for a work-life balance
  • demonstrate Prospect’s commitment to challenging a long hours culture
  • show non-members Prospect’s activity on matters that may also concern them.

Rep action

  • Supply and refresh union notice boards with campaign posters. More can be ordered.
  • You can’t beat face-to-face contact – arrange meetings, consider a programme of floor-walks, hold lunchtime events. Encourage dialogue about concerns such as hours, workload and organisational change.
  • Body and workplace mapping may help by building evidence, strengthening your case and increasing your confidence. Some members may not recognise workload as a problem until prompted or probed. A survey may also help.
  • Promote the campaign among non-members too. It provides strong recruitment opportunities.

Meetings (and tele/video conferences)

To make sure they’re relevant:

  • Bring together small groups of members with a common interest, for example field workers who want TOIL.
  • Identify your target audience and publicise the event accordingly.
  • Apply good meeting etiquette – ensure the timing and location are convenient; stick to published times; encourage dialogue, participation and the exchange of ideas. Lunch breaks are often popular and have the added advantage of encouraging a break in the working day.
  • Focus on WTYT alone so the meeting isn’t side-tracked by other agendas.
  • If members raise concerns that cannot be resolved there and then, take them away but commit to when you’ll respond.
  • Don’t close a meeting without agreeing arrangements for the next one, when you’ll be able to update them on the campaign and report back on progress. Encourage people to take forward campaign messages.

The key point is that members can feel isolated, especially if under pressure to work long hours. They may feel helpless. Organising people gets them together to share their experiences, develop solutions and collectively agree proposals for negotiating improvements. The more organised, the stronger the collective voice!
