Branch intranet pages

A number of Prospect branches already have their own eBranch or internet.works website. But some branches don’t have web access at work. In most of those areas, employers are happy to give Prospect space on their intranet site, so we have created a system called intranet.works.

Intranet.works is a package of content that branches can use as the basis of their intranet pages. It was put together after consultation with a number of branches.

Unfortunately there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution – some employers insist that branch pages comply with their house style while others are relaxed about layout and design. Some insist that their IT departments lay out the pages on Prospect’s behalf, and others will only accept fully laid-out pages.

To try to meet these different demands, intranet.works is available on CD-ROM as a series of laid-out html pages. You can view screenshots of three of the pages: home page, workplace advice and members' services.

The html pages include the Prospect logo and use our two main colours plus black throughout. The text is formatted using cascading style sheets (CSS) and is scaleable, so that users can increase or decrease the size in their browser window. These pages are very basic in their design - there are no graphics other than the Prospect logo, and the entire layout is extremely simple. The content has five main areas:

  • ‘Home page’ is a general introduction which you will need to customise. It includes instructions on how to create additional navigation links to any new pages you create.
  • ‘About Prospect’ is a single page with basic information about the union. Branches may want to add info about themselves and their reps.
  • ‘Join Prospect’ is a single page with ten good reasons to join, plus subscription rates, with a link to PDF versions of our application form.
  • 'Members' services' summarises the range of benefits, services, deals and discounts we offer.
  • ‘Workplace advice’ sumarises the range of work-related advice, support and services that Prospect provides.

Most of the content is generic and will need customising for your branch. For example, on the 'workplace advice' page you might want to mention any current pay negotiations; non-MOD areas might want to delete the reference to the noise-induced deafness scheme.

Keeping your intranet pages up to date

The intranet.works content is intended to have a reasonable shelf life. We will issue updates when necessary – for example, when our subscription rates change. Branches will need to make sure that the updates are processed at their end. If any of the content is customised branches will also have to take responsibility for keeping it up to date.
