Branches

Recruitment should be a key activity for every Prospect representative. Identifying non-members, reporting staff changes, contacting newcomers and persuading them to join are the basis for all other Prospect work.

In most branches the task of organising recruitment is normally allocated to the membership secretary. But the job of the membership secretary is not to do all the recruiting. That should be shared out between as many active members as possible. The membership secretary's job is to co-ordinate the recruitment effort and to give it direction.

Recruitment should be a regular item on agendas for branch, section and sub-section meetings. Reports should be made to committees on new staff joining, whether they have been approached and the number recruited. This is the time to ensure all representatives are aware of non-members in their area and to develop a strategy for recruiting them into Prospect.

Headquarters

If you need advice on recruiting in your workplace, the Recruitment, Organisation and Members Services department at headquarters is there to help. The department co-ordinates recruitment efforts throughout Prospect and offers people and resources for recruitment drives.

Recruitment can be tied into meetings at your workplace. If you are interested in holding a seminar or workplace meeting - perhaps inviting a guest speaker - contact the ROMS department.

Equally, the unit can help you share experience with other branches or sections on recruitment.

Literature

Up to date supplies of recruitment literature should be held by branches. Every representative should have a supply of membership application forms to hand.

A branch recruitment leaflet is an asset in any recruitment drive. Use a local angle and issues to put across the message of your branch.

Where your branch does not have the resources to produce a leaflet on its own, contact the press office or the RO unit at Prospect headquarters.

Don't stockpile signed applications - send them in immediately. Every day lost costs Prospect money.
