Prospect Pay Review 2012 in Telefonica UK

9 March 2012

Prospect has written to Telefonica highlighting that this is the first time that our union membership in the company has ever rejected a final offer in a ballot.

Prospect has expressed our strong disappointment that the company has decided to impose the pay award in the face of a majority rejection in a ballot.

We have passed on your comments to the company anonymously. As expected they focused on the cost of living, being undervalued in relation to those you manage and in respect of high levels of responsibility and achievement, unfairness in relation to your peers including recent recruits and a lack of progression. There was also a strong feeling that the company was not listening to its management population. Your message is consistent with the union’s representations over many months.

The union fully understands that Telefonica is constrained by worldwide economic circumstances and that view is reflected in many members’ comments. Nonetheless that can provide no justification for failing to acknowledge your consistently expressed legitimate concerns.

It is time for the company to recognise the unfairness built into its pay arrangements for managers and agree with us a process to eliminate them over time. The company is going through many changes. The need to change the pay system is as important as any.

We are still talking to Telefónica in order to reach a mutually acceptable resolution to the 2012 pay review and in addition would equally urge members to raise the issue to your line manager. Your views do count and remember the union does not exist without you… Prospect is its members so if you want your union to be the most effective, well organised, well-informed union, a union that can help you in all aspects of your working life then don’t think we can do it without you!
