Personal injury scheme Prospect's Personal Injury (PI) scheme provides quality legal advice for members, at work and in their private lives. In case of accident or disease, it can help you or your dependants to win compensation for a relatively minor injury or a life-threatening condition. In 2007 we won a total of over £2.7m in compensation through the PI scheme on behalf of 110 members.
The PI scheme covers: - accidents and illness arising from employment (members only)
- accidents and illness which are non-work related (members, partners, spouses and financially dependent members of the immediate family).
Prospect works closely with its solicitors Russell Jones & Walker who have a wealth of experience in civil and criminal law. RJW have offices around the UK and offer convenient access to members. They provide professional advice and assistance and if necessary take your case through the courts.

From our casebook In 1998 Michael Scott was seriously injured on his way home from work, when his motorcycle was hit by a car. His right leg was broken in six places. He needed skin grafts, a 12-inch steel pin and many operations. He eventually returned to work on light duties, but in 2003 reluctantly took medical retirement. Prospect's solicitors helped him claim damages and won a six-figure settlement.
"The union's solicitors were brilliant," said Michael. "I don't know what I would have done without Prospect." Prospect member Ian Johnston developed vibration white finger while working for the Ministry of Defence from 1973-82. Symptoms include coldness and tingling, and manual dexterity is affected. Prospect's solicitors lodged a retrospective claim for damages, and Ian was awarded £9,000. "I would like other member in a similar situation to realise how Prospect can held them," said Ian. "I've had first class service."
Conditions The member's partner, spouse and any financially dependent member of the immediate family is entitled to be considered for the Personal Injury scheme except for work-related claims Wherever mentioned, legal advice and assistance is offered at the union's discretion on an individual basis, depending on the facts and merits of the case Our legal benefits are only available to fully paid up members, in membership from the date their problem arises and for the duration of the case. All correspondence should be clearly marked Prospect Legal Services. The accident or disease should be reported to the Department for Work and Pensions and the employer. Do not enter into correspondence or negotiations until advice is received from Prospect. In particular, do not engage your own solicitor as this will exclude you from the Prospect scheme. Prospect does not fund clinical negligence cases all the way to trial, but we offer a service that will provide you with initial advice on your case following investigation by the solicitors. If the solicitors recommend that you proceed with the litigation they will then discuss with you options for funding the case.
