Our approach to international development
In keeping with the ideals of the trade union movement, core labour standards and the millennium development goals (MDGs), Prospect's international development work is built around the framework of a unanimous vote at our 2008 national conference to:
- continue to raise awareness and contribute towards the achievement of the United Nations' millennium development goals
- continue activities under the "Think Global, Act Union" campaign
- broaden the scope of Prospect's engagement and influence on development issues.
From 2008 to 2011 we are running a project called "Bargaining for International Development", funded by the Department for International Development's (DFID) - Development Awareness Fund (DAF).
The project will:
- deliver pilot training modules for members and representatives to equip them to contribute, individually and collectively, to the MDGs
- support members and branches to promote a trades union approach to corporate social responsibility and procurement policies
- work with members and branches to practically engage with humanitarian and trade union solidarity projects according to their interests and professional expertise
- develop a network of development advocates who will be trained and supported to raise development related issues in their workplaces and branches.
