Burma: no more bloodshed; protect the peaceful demonstrators
Prospect is encouraging members to do what they can to show solidarity with the people of Burma, and is emphasising that this is an issue of trade union solidarity. Although the role of trade unions has not been given a high profile in the media coverage of events in Burma, the country's clandestine trade union movement has been actively engaged in the demonstrations. One of the key charges against the Burmese regime is its systematic use of child and forced labour and its denial of freedom of association offences against the core labour standards of the International Labour Organisation.
A heavy military presence on Burma's streets, combined with mass arrests, has stamped out for now the recent massive protests. Huge numbers of troops are visible on street corners across Rangoon, the focal point for the demonstrations, and fear and terror is widespread.
Security forces have scaled up their efforts to curb the mass distribution of images and blogs providing information about the crackdown. Internet access remains limited and phone lines, including of diplomats, appear to have been cut. Random searches for cameras and mobile phones have reportedly been introduced in Rangoon, with arrests taking place.
Security forces in Burma have raided monasteries and attacked peaceful demonstrators, firing live bullets as well as tear gas and beating protesters with batons. An unambiguous message must be sent urgently to Burma's military leaders that their brutal crackdown on peaceful protestors will not be tolerated or fuelled by any member of the international community.
