An application has been made to the DFID Global Poverty Action Fund (GPAF) to the value of £680,000.00. Oxfam (GB/Kenya) have agreed to partner with Prospect in a proposed project to take forward the work with KETAWU. Oxfam will adapt their successful Kenyan programmes on climate change and the women’s “We can” initiative to deliver to the KETAWU members. It is envisaged that the third programme on health & safety will be designed and led by Prospect member and FTO expertise reporting to the EIS Committee.

Famine looms at a time when food prices have been increasing sharply for some time. Since last May, the price of maize has more than doubled in parts of Ethiopia, and that of red sorghum has risen in Somalia by 240 per cent. In Kenya, white maize now costs 58 per cent more than it did a year ago.

The World Day against Child Labour - The ILO’s most recent global estimate is that 115 million children are involved in hazardous work. This is work that by its nature or the circumstances, in which it is carried out, is likely to harm children’s health, safety or morals. Children working in many different industries and occupations can be exposed to such risks and the problem is global, affecting industrialised as well as developing countries.
