More about Prospect: science, engineering and technology
Our SET Group covers members from
over 100 different branches of the union. Their specialisms
range from chemistry to computer science, genetics to geology.
The depth and breadth of their knowledge gives Prospect a
well-respected voice on science, engineering and technology
matters.
The group meets four times a year
and brings together representatives from branches across the
country to exchange ideas and experiences. It:
- promotes the general professional, occupations and labour
market interests of Prospect scientists, engineers and technologists
and advises our National Executive Committee on any such
matters.
- advises the NEC on general science, engineering and technology
policies which have an impact on Prospect and its members.
These include the organisation, ethical, economic and social
issues surrounding the practice of science, engineering
and technology, within the UK and beyond. Also specific
areas of policy of concern to Prospect members including,
for example, energy, environment, genetic manipulation,
agriculture and defence.
- campaigns on these issues and in doing so seeks to improve
the position of SET members.
It regularly responds to external
requests for views on issues like energy, environment, genetic
manipulation and food safety. Recent initiatives include
submissions to the government on managing the nuclear legacy,
the supply of scientists and engineers, and energy policy.
