Get involved: LGBT+ Network

We are committed to ensuring people from all backgrounds, including those who are LGBT+ have the same opportunities as everyone else and are able to work effectively, free of discrimination, bias, bullying and harassment.

What does the network do?

The network supports, promotes and takes part in:

  • Pride events locally and nationally
  • attending the TUC LGBT+ conference
  • having a member sit on the TUC LGBT+ Committee
  • campaigning for improved pension and legal equalities.

Who can join our LGBT+ network?

All members are welcome to join. You can do this by emailing [email protected] or logging into your ‘activities’ page.

Everyone has a very important role in creating LGBT+ friendly workplaces and environments. Interventions and support from allies can have a huge impact in getting positive changes made.

How the network can help

We want the network to deal with the issues our LGBT+ members face. To do this effectively, we need to know what those issues are.

In your workplace we can:

  • help you set up a local LGBT+ network
  • provide training to help educate our reps and members
  • give you access to Prospect experts who can help you with any issues.

What you can do

To make the changes we want to see in the workplace and in wider society, we have to be visible and active. You can help by:

  • encouraging friends and colleagues to get involved
  • encouraging non-members to join Prospect
  • talking to your branch about events they can run.

Join our steering group

The aim of the group is to:

  • help support branches with LGBT+ inclusive issues
  • support Pride events
  • assist with ideas for Branch-led LGBT+ activities and campaigns
  • ideas for LGBT+ events that we can run or support
  • provide a feedback method to the National Executive Committees Equality Subcommittee

We aim to meet 4 times a year. You do not have to be a Representative to take part. If you are interested in becoming part of the group, please contact [email protected]

Why equalities matter

It is a basic human right to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. Nobody falls into simply one ‘box’ or group. We are all part of a variety of groups which shape and form us. We work together to solve our issues.

  • ensuring that workplace procedures dealing with discrimination and harassment cover sexual orientation and gender identity
  • ensuring that employment benefits and agreements, such as pensions and family leave arrangements include same sex couples
  • supporting lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and trans people in the workplace and in the union.
