The Mechanics Institute, Manchester
The original Mechanics Institute was founded in 1824. It grew from strength to strength and by the 1850\\\\\\\'s was attracting as many as 100,000 visitors to its exhibitions.
The Mechanics was a centre for many of the meetings that led to the development of the Co-operative movement and the Trade Union movement. The most famous of these was the founding of the Trade Union Congress in June 1868.
