Moving forward
Association of Licensed Aircraft Engineers (ALAE)
In August 2009, ALAE members voted overwhelmingly to merge with Prospect. ALAE has just over 2,000 members. They transferred to Prospect on 17 November.
Connect with Prospect
Since late 2008 we have been in discussion with Connect about the possibility of their becoming part of Prospect.
In June, delegates at the Connect national conference voted in favour of a recommendation from their National Executive Committee that they should transfer their membership to Prospect - see our news release dated 26 June.
Connect members were balloted on the proposals. The ballot closed on 3 November, and the result was a decisive vote in favour of merging with Prospect.
About Connect
Prospect has had a long and positive association with Connect in many trade union forums. We feel it is compatible with us in terms of culture, policy and membership.
It represents 20,000 managers and professionals in the communications industry. Dating back to the first world war, its origins, like that of the industry itself, lie in the publicly owned Post Office and British Telecom.
After BT was privatised in the 1980s, Connect, then called the Society of Telecom Executives, began a process of change to reflect the changes in the industry and position itself to deal with global companies in a free market.
In 2000, the union's name was changed to Connect. It now represents members in over 600 companies from multinationals to self-employed consultants, working on fixed line telephony, mobile, wi-fi, internet and IT applications and solutions.
